My family has been making lettuce wraps for years. Like everyone else, we have tried to cut back on the amount of carbs we eat. This is my favorite go to, especially when I know I don’t have a lot of time to prepare dinner.
I will often cook up the ground turkey the night before so all I have to do the following evening is warm up and assemble.
What makes these lettuce wraps different or special? The hoisen sauce, baby. It is my favorite. I used to have to drive 30 mins away to get it at a specialty market in Sacramento, CA. Then one day, out of nowhere, Walmart started carrying it. Come to find out, it’s on Amazon too.
I start with washing up some butter lettuce or hearts of romaine. Core and separate leaves.
Then brown some ground turkey or chicken (I usually cook 2 lbs so we have leftovers). I don’t use a lot of seasonings, just salt and pepper. The flavors in the sauce are so amazing I don’t want the meat to compete with the yummy sauce.
I warm up the hoisin sauce in a sauce pan with a splash of rice vinegar and a splash of hot pepper oil. Heat on low so it doesn’t burn. This thins it a bit and gives it a little kick. I have also added chopped peanuts too for a little crunch.
Assemble and eat.
So, this is the big reveal. This is the infamous Koon Chun Hoisin Sauce.
For those of you doing Keto, I believe the sauce is Keto friendly. There is a little sugar but you are only putting a tablespoon of sauce on each wrap.
If you are lucky enough to have a Walmart near, you can get this sauce for a reasonable $2.98. If not, it is available on Amazon.
I hope you love this recipe and sauce as much as we do.
You can also print out the recipe. Enjoy!.
